Victory: Closed the loophole in the existing city bag ban ordinance so that extra thick "reusable" plastic bags, which were still only being used once, are also banned.
Nn December 5, 2023, Charleston City Council voted to close a loophole in its plastic bag ban that exempts extra-thick plastic bags. These bags were previously exempt, because they were deemed a “reusable” option, when in reality, they were still being used like a single-use plastic bag. The amendment goes into effect July 1, 2024 - after that customers must bring their own bags or use provided paper bags.
