Goal: to pass an ordinance that expands on the carryout plastic bag ban to include other pernicious litter items such as plastic straws and foam containers.
On March 21, the Charleston County Council voted to pass a ban on plastic carryout bags, plastic straws, and expanded polystyrene foam products such as coolers, ice chests, cups, bowls, plates, clamshells, shipping boxes, containers, or any other merchandise containing polystyrene/plastic foam that is not wholly encapsulated or encased by a more durable material. This ordinance would affect food and grocery establishments, other businesses, and county facilities.
